To stand out, tailor your application to the company as if you were applying for a full-time job. Highlight why you specifically want to intern with them. Take a moment to understand what they do – why have you chosen this company? It could be as simple as admiring their focus on SEO or following their journey for a while and wanting to contribute.
Don’t forget to show your personality in your cover letter or portfolio! If you don’t have a portfolio, create one! Use Canva to design simple projects to showcase your creativity. Start building your personal brand early, even if you don’t have much to show yet. A clean, professional CV with a clear photo also makes a strong impression. Believe it or not, many CVs are dismissed right away if they appear poorly prepared. Avoid unprofessional photos (e.g., taken in a bathroom with cluttered backgrounds) and using Chat GPT. A clean, simple CV and a good photo are great starting points.
Lastly, network actively on LinkedIn and send speculative applications to companies that aren’t advertising internships. If you land an interview, research the company, ask insightful questions, and show your enthusiasm – it’s a surefire way to stand out!
You don’t need to be an expert, but a solid understanding of marketing basics is crucial. The skills required depend on the company you apply to. Once you’re in, maximize your learning opportunities and demonstrate your ability to grow and take on tasks independently. Impressing your supervisor will go a long way!

If the company you’re applying to uses a specific tool like HubSpot, familiarize yourself with it beforehand by watching tutorials. This shows initiative and gives you a competitive edge in interviews.
The most important step is to align expectations with your supervisor from the start. Clearly communicate what you hope to learn and achieve during your internship. Trust your gut – if the company doesn’t invest time in you or fails to follow the agreed-upon plan, don’t hesitate to consider changing your placement.
Ultimately, it’s up to you to make the most of your internship. Take every opportunity to learn – whether it’s observing client meetings, attending webinars, or tackling hands-on assignments. Be proactive, do your own research, and only seek help when you’re truly stuck. You’d be amazed at how much you can learn from Google, TikTok or YouTube!

However, having a portfolio is essential for a digital marketing internship. If you don’t have any previous work, create something! Use Canva to design social media posts or prototype a website. Your portfolio can also include TikTok videos you’ve made, photos you’ve taken, or content you created for a previous internship. The goal is to showcase your creativity and skills – think outside the box!
