Have you ever wondered why certain websites always appear first when you search on Google? It's not a coincidence, but thanks to something called SEO, or search engine optimization as it's actually called. SEO is a strategic process to improve a website's visibility in organic (non-paid) search results. With billions of searches conducted daily, it's no surprise that SEO has become a cornerstone of modern digital marketing.

But what does search engine optimization really mean, and why is it so important for your website? In this blog post, we will dive in and explain what search engine optimization is, as well as what components are within it and some examples of what is included in the different parts.

Content:

  1. Search engine optimization and its three pillars
  2. On-page

  3. Off-page

  4. Technical SEO

1. Search engine optimization and its three pillars

SEO is essentially a collective term for all the activities done to improve a website's visibility in organic search results. In other words, it's about optimizing your website to make it more attractive to search engines like Google. Think of it as a way to make your website more search-friendly and relevant to your potential customers.

Search engine optimization can be broken down into three main areas: On-page, off-page, and technical SEO. Let's delve into these three parts and explain them in more detail!

2. On-page

When we talk about on-page SEO, we're talking about optimizing the elements on your website that you have control over. This can include things like:

  • Keyword optimization: Using relevant keywords or phrases in your headings, text, and meta descriptions.

  • High-quality content: Creating content that is both informative, interesting, and unique for your visitors.

  • Alt-text: Having relevant alt text for your images, with a focus on keywords.

  • Internal links: By linking between different pages on your website, you make it easier for visitors to navigate and find the information they're looking for, and you also make it easier for search engines to understand your website. When search engines like Google crawl your website, they follow internal links to understand the structure and content of your website. This helps them index your pages correctly and determine which pages are most important.

3. Off-page

Off-page SEO is all about what happens outside your own website. The most important thing here is to try to build external links to your website from other relevant websites. The more relevant links you have, the more credible your website is considered by search engines.

4. Technical SEO

The technical SEO part is about ensuring that your website works well for both users and search engines. This includes things like:

  • Fast loading time: A fast website is important for both user experience and SEO.

  • Mobile-friendly design: Today, more and more people use mobile devices when visiting a website. Therefore, it's important that your website is adapted for mobile viewing for a good user experience. Google primarily uses the mobile version to rank websites. A user-friendly website adapted for mobile can therefore improve your ranking and attract more visitors.

  • Sitemap: A sitemap is like a table of contents for your website. It gives search engines an overview of all the pages on your website, making it much easier for search engines like Google to find and index all your content.

  • Breadcrumbs: Breadcrumbs act as a clear guide through your website. They show the visitor where they are and how they got there, from the homepage to the current page. By showing a clear hierarchy, breadcrumbs make it easier for the user to navigate and at the same time give search engines a better understanding of the website's structure.

There's certainly much more to learn about search engine optimization, but today we've covered what SEO means, its three main components, and some examples of what's involved in each part!
